Immigration is one of the most discussed things in today’s society especially in the United States. Specifically with our current president, whose made it his goal to get rid of all illegal immigrants and overall lower the amount of people coming into this country, this includes a travel ban and building a wall that covers the entire mexican border. One of the reasons as to why this issue is so big is the fact that most of the country does not agree with the cruel and inhumane laws that are being legislated by our federal government. Whether it be increasing it, reducing it, jobs being lost or the ICE separating families, immigration is a controversial issue talked about on almost every media outlet.

Jellinek, Michael S. “U.S. immigration policy: What harms will persist?” Pediatric News

This article is written by MIchael S. Jellinek and published by Pediatric News. The inhumane policy that is separating families after crossing the border has already separated up to 2,300 children and parents. These separated families are not in contact, lost to each other and there is no current plan of reuniting them. This policy has created many harms to both the children and their parents such as massive trauma and depression. Especially for those children who are still young, this long term separation causes detachment, impairs their ability to form relationships and causes these kids to suffer from nightmares, depression, persistent anxiety and trust issues. This not only ruins the lives of the families but also causes guilt to the guards and the rest of America. This policy has been reversed and hopefully permanently changed.

This author wrote this article to inform its readers about how the ICE is separating families and the negative affect this creates on them. This is one of the most covered issues in today’s media. This article discusses the immigration policy that is responsible for separating the families that cross the border and goes on to list the many harms caused to the children, parents and society as a result of this policy. The audience is specifically directed towards pediatricians or children’s health personnel  as it is published by Pediatric News, which is known for pieces related towards the health of children. The author also directs this towards the older or more educated audience as the author discusses the politics and the state of society in a mature writing style. The purpose of the author is too inform, he wants to let people know what is happening as a result of the Trump administration’s policy that is separating families. How the policy harms both the parents and children, along with society as a whole. The article discusses the many harms and how the policy enacted by Trump’s Administration and how it does not justify immoral means even though it is a punishment for illegal immigration. The genre of this piece is a newsletter published by Pediatric News, informing its readers on the harms caused by this policy. This newsletter numerically lists the harms that will persist such as trauma, broken families and diminishing the security of other immigrants. The author’s stance towards this is that he is against the immigration policy that is responsible for the separation of families at the border. He makes this attitude quiet clear as he lists the many harms of the policy and how inhumane and cruel it really is. He hopes that the response to the policy will remind the government of their better selves.
